Some things should be left unsaid

“I wish it didn’t have to be this way”, she thought as the bell rang and her classmates started to file out of the room. She was the last one to leave the room just like everyday. It was something Shakespeare had said himself-“All the worlds a stage”. She had to play her part. She said this to herself just like everyday. She tried so hard to fit in but always seemed to fall a step short. She could feel their eyes follow her every movement but just pretended like she didn’t know a thing. Their numbers were increasing by the minute but there was nothing she could do about it. Her hands were tied. They knew every thing about her and her life. Or at least they thought they knew.

She unlocked her door and left her shoes next to it. She had to be very cautious about the people around her. One wrong move and someone could get hurt. That was why she had to do everything alone. The last time she had let someone get close to her, she had destroyed every thing she had.

He watched her shrug her shoulders, lower her head and walk through the crowds. He wondered why she did this to herself. Living like this. She had been acting strangely ever since the term had started. The last time he had seen her she was smiling and laughing with her friends. She was acing tests and was the life of her class. There were so many people who looked up to her, admired her and it had gone to an extent where some even stalked her. But none of them knew where she had disappeared for a whole week. She came back demented and lost. People talked about it for a while but eventually got back to their respective lives. It was none of their concern they said. He must have been thinking out loudly because some people were staring at him when he walked through the doors. He slid his card across the counter and entered the hall. He started climbing the long flight of stairs and braced himself for what came next.

The room went dark as the gusts blew out the candles she had lit and placed in the center of her room. That was a very bad omen she said to herself as she groped around in the dark in search of the matches. She looked around the room as she lit the candles again. The bare walls, the neatly made bed, the empty wardrobe; careful that she didn’t leave a trace of herself in the room. The day she erased any trace of her being here at all wasn’t too far either. Suddenly she heard something outside her door. She cautiously opened the door to find the corridor empty. She was sure she heard something.

He was about to knock on her door but just couldn’t find the courage to do so. She didn’t turn up for her classes for the next two days. He wondered what had happened to her. Upon making his mind that he was going to go talk to her today, he left the building and started walking towards her apartment. Just as he was about to open the gates, he heard a commotion coming from the other side.

A single tear rolled down his face. There she was, laying facedown, a serene expression on her face with a sheet of paper in her hand, a single line written on it. Some things should be left unsaid. No one really knew what happened to her. Some things in life just went unsaid and there was nothing anyone could do about it.
